This week we want to congratulate Marie on her 90th birthday and what an amazing person she is.  She’s been volunteering with us for the past 9 years and although there have been lots of changes, she has continued to give her wonderful support to the Uckfield Volunteer Centre.

It was a pleasure to meet Marie and ask her a few questions….

How long have you lived in Uckfield?

Marie told me that she’d been living in Uckfield for the past 18 years and had been very happy here.  ‘Uckfield has changed a bit, to keep up with the pace of modern life but it’s one of the nicest places you can live.  Uckfield has a certain atmosphere, there’s no comparison, the people are lovely and friendly and you go into any shop in the town and you get a very good welcome.  The cinema ‘The Picture House’ is a great bonus, with its choice of films and very good seating, it’s beautiful. ‘

What is your role in the Uckfield Volunteer Centre?

I am responsible for the window displays and my job entails changing these weekly and of course I help with anything else such as helping customers with their photocopying, laminating and hearing aid batteries.

What do you like about working at the Uckfield Volunteer Centre?

It’s just nice to think you can help others, there’s a lovey friendly bunch of people who work here, everyone does different hours so we may not see everyone who works here but we get together at meetings and the Community Lunches which are held 3 or 4 times year.  It keeps you young and makes you feel part of the community and it’s good to make the effort.’

‘It took me a great deal of courage to walk in through the door when I first decided I would like to help.  I started working on the Red Cross desk, handing out information and talking to people.  Sheila Charlesworth, who ran the Uckfield Volunteer Centre in those days, suggested I move over to be one of the centre’s volunteers so that is how it all started.

What a stylish and great asset Marie is to the Uckfield Volunteer Centre and to still be helping others at 90 may just be part of the secret of how she stays looking so young!
