One inspirational couple decided they could make a difference to those who would be spending Christmas Day alone. This little seed of an idea grew into a reality and now a very special event is in its third year.
Teresa and John Lane, both in their 70s open their doors to upwards of 20 people. Volunteers will serve a delicious lunch prepared by Nik Hall, a professional chef from Glyndebourne Opera House who has himself generously volunteered his services for several years including the charity Crisis at Christmas.
Teresa and John were motivated by the thought of people being lonely on Christmas Day and hope that by inviting those who don’t have families to go to, they will spread some warm Christmas cheer.
‘I think it must be awful to spend what should be a joyous day on your own. We hosted the lunch for the past two years which were a great success and decided to do it again for a third year’ Teresa said.
The 3 course lunch will be held at the Belmont Centre of Holy Cross church from midday with the meal being served at 1pm, there’s even some transport laid on for those unable to get there under their own steam.
‘The lunch is an opportunity to chat to others, some who have lived in Uckfield for many years and some who have only recently moved here and want to make friends’ Teresa added.
Tickets for the lunch are free but donations are welcome – to secure your place, tickets are available from Uckfield Volunteer Centre or Gale and Woolgar, both located on Uckfield High Street or by calling Teresa and John Lane on 01825 762456.
