It was eighteen years ago that a group of Uckfield residents thought they would like to organise a ‘one off’ Uckfield Festival Uckfield Big Day to improve the cultural life of Uckfield and to promote the talents of local people, together with creating a sense of community.  It was such a success that they decided to continue it for another year and here we are 18 years later!

Every year Uckfield Festival grows in size, showcasing the fabulous talent of local people –  of music speech, drama, dance and the visual arts.    The Uckfield Festival has provided the platform for Bridge Arts Big Day Arts Fair , UckfieldFM, Film Society, workshops for schools to make puppets for the Children’s Parade on Uckfield Big Day, lots of talented local musicians and singers have played at our events and have gone on to do great things nationwide and even abroad.

There’s even more on offer – the community is served by  Big Day when the societies and clubs have pitches which allow them to promote themselves or make enough money to sustain them during the following year.  The Festival takes place during the second week of July with the Uckfield Festival Big Day on the second Saturday of July.

The Big Day is held on the first Saturday of the second week of July when people come from far and wide to the events on Luxford Field. Community, and retail, stalls sell anything and everything from crafts, plants, jewellery to food as well as fun stalls with games and entertainment. This enables groups and companies to promote themselves and fundraise and, where applicable, sell their goods.  There are some fabulous bargains to be had at Uckfield Big Day.

Lots to see at the Big Day

Spin Offs. The Festival Association encourages events which have then blossomed in their own right, and these include The Kit Car Grand Prix, The Art Trail, Uckfield FM, Spiritus Drumming Band.

Grand Parade. The Festival Association pays for workshops in the local primary schools where the children make puppets to display in the Grand Parade on the Big Day. This has now expanded to include local community groups as well. These workshops would not possible without the input of Spiritus, the Carnival Arts Group, Same Sky and Uckfield Community Technology College.

There are some great shows to come and enjoy…. and if you are interested in art, don’t forget the Uckfield Art Show at Bridge Cottage.

We will be holding a stall at the Uckfield Big Dayl, and if you’d like to find out more about our oganisation, click here to go to our home page.
